Part 1 of the double conference of the University of Erfurt and FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg. The conference in Erfurt has the motto "Structures". The "Strategies" conference will take place from 30 September to 2 October 2025 at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg.

About the conference

The conference in Erfurt (19.03-21.03.2025) asks about the structures of the political public sphere(s): How can these be conceptualised conceptually, theoretically or conceptually and how do they in turn structure the political system? We want to discuss the social, economic and political factors that shape and constantly (re)organise the public sphere as a dynamic field. We also want to address the extent to which this changes the conditions that form the framework for conflict and consensus and along which we determine the justice and problem-solving capacity of a political order: How can these be conceptualised, theorised or conceptualised and how do they in turn structure the political system? We want to discuss the social, economic and political factors that shape and constantly (re)organise the public sphere as a dynamic field. We also want to address the extent to which this changes the conditions that form the framework for conflict and consensus and along which we determine the justice and problem-solving capacity of a political order.

Further information on the programme and registration can be found on the conference website.

Conference concept

The basic political-theoretical concept of the public sphere is currently of particular relevance. To what extent can the much-vaunted threats to democracy be attributed to the erosion of the democratic public sphere? What role do structural factors - from transnationalisation to digitalisation - play in this development; and how do individual actors drive this development with their strategies? Who can and who should intervene in the development and restructure, limit or curate the public sphere(s)? The double conference of the DVPW Section for Political Theory and History of Ideas 2025 will take up and reflect on these debates on the political public sphere.

The double conference "Political Public Spheres" is the official spring and autumn conference 2025 of the section "Political Theory and History of Ideas" of the German Political Science Association.
