Panel discussion on the topic "Autocracies and secret services breathing down our necks - the protection of dissidents in Germany" with Professor Sophia Hoffmann (Faculty of Economics, Law and Social Sciences). The event is organised by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

Information from the organisers

Dissidents in Germany and Europe are exposed to various intimidation strategies. This is because foreign governments often pursue opposition activists abroad, using their secret services to do so. Even targeted killings occur.

In Europe, there are different strategies and concepts for the protection of dissidents. On the one hand, the event will shed light on how and why secret services persecute foreign opposition figures abroad. On the other hand, it will look at the strategies
German and European security authorities contribute to the protection of foreign opposition members.

The panel discussion is part of a series of events organised in cooperation with the professorship for International Politics at the University of Erfurt. It brings together representatives from intelligence agencies, academia and civil society and addresses the fundamental tension between security and freedom in which intelligence work takes place.
