New cafeteria building for the University of Erfurt

This morning, Thuringia's State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Higher Education, Tourism and Digital Affairs, Carsten Feller, presented the Thuringian Student Services Organisation (Studierendenwerk) with a allocation notification of around 24.7 million euros for the construction of a new cafeteria on the University of Erfurt campus.

The building will be constructed on Max-Weber-Allee between the research building "Weltbeziehungen" and the university library, thus completing the "axis of new buildings" on campus. It will replace the current cafeteria, which, according to the Student Servies Organisation, has reached the end of its "technical life". In addition, the cafeteria, as it was once planned and built, no longer meets today's space requirements. A refurbishment of the existing building was initially considered but then rejected.

The new building will now provide a modern and functional cafeteria to cater for the approximately 6,000 students and employees on campus. The premises are to be designed in such a way that they can be used flexibly. Students and staff of the University of Erfurt were invited to submit their ideas and wishes to the Student Servies Organisation in advance.

The Student Servies Organisation is realising the project itself as the client. The award procedure for the project planning is already close to being finalised. The building should be completed by the end of the 2028 summer semester. What will become of the existing building on Hieranaplatz once the new cafeteria is up and running in four years' time remains to be seen. Although there are already ideas and brainstorms for a subsequent use, for example as open (group) workspaces or similar, the decision on this will only be made after the new building has been completed, according to the Thuringian Ministry for Economis Affairs, Science and Digital Society.
