Prof. Dr. Benno Werlen elected Chair of the Academia Europaea

The governing body of the Academia Europaea (London) elected Prof. Dr. Benno Werlen, former Fellow of the Max-Weber-Kolleg at the University of Erfurt, as Chair of the social science section "Human Mobility, Governance, Environment and Space".

This section deals with interdisciplinary and internationally comparative studies on cultural, economic, political, social and spatial aspects. Its members include anthropologists, demographers, geographers, political scientists, sociologists and spatial scientists.

Founded in 1988, the Academia Europaea (AE) now has over 5,500 renowned members worldwide (including around 700 from Germany and 4 from the Max-Weber-Kolleg) from all disciplines of the humanities, law, economics, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, mathematics and medicine. It promotes the global dissemination of outstanding scientific achievements by European researchers. The European Commission recently appointed the AE to represent the EU in the G20 scientific advisory network as its "National Academy". It is tasked with formulating priorities for global action and submitting them to the G20 Summit for discussion.

Membership of the Academy is by invitation and follows a rigorous selection process carried out by the Steering Groups of the Sections. Members of the Academia Europaea can nominate academics for election in an annual cycle. The next cycle for the nomination of candidates begins on 1 October 2024 and ends on 31 January 2025.

"We warmly congratulate Benno Werlen on this honorable election as Chair of the Social Sciences Section of the Academia Europaea and expect it to provide new impetus, especially on issues of sustainable development – one of the most pressing topics in Europe," says Hartmut Rosa, Director of the Max-Weber-Kolleg.
