Summer School on the Conservation and Digitisation of Oriental Manuscripts

A German-Egyptian summer school on the conservation and digitisation of Oriental manuscripts will take place from 18 to 22 July at the Gotha Research Library of the University of Erfurt. It is organised by the DFG-funded project "Cultural Heritage in Cyberspace" and led by Professor Albrecht Fuess (University of Marburg). The event, entitled "From Paper to Portals: The Conservation and Digitisation of Oriental Manuscripts", will be held in English.

The summer school brings together advanced students and doctoral candidates from Germany and Egypt, who will exchange ideas on the research, conservation and digitisation of Oriental manuscripts. The young scholars from research fields and disciplines such as Islamic Studies, Arabic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Heritage Studies and the Digital Humanities acquire in-depth knowledge about the handling of Oriental manuscripts. Content-related, material, codicological and conservational aspects of these manuscript cultures will be examined, as will questions of research infrastructure and digitisation. The basis for the in-depth joint learning and training is the large and important collection of Arabic, Persian and Turkish manuscripts of the Gotha Research Library.
